Objective

Your task is to locate, identify, photograph, collect, and document DNA evidence from specific items scattered throughout the University Center (UC). Each group will follow unique clues to find four distinct types of DNA evidence: saliva, skin cells, and synthetic blood. You will use proper CSI techniques to ensure evidence is collected accurately and without contamination.

Group Roles

Each group will consist of 3–4 members, with each person assigned a specific role:

  1. Photographer:

    • Responsible for taking high-quality photographs of the evidence.

    • Must capture three types of photos for each item:

      • Overall photos: Shows the evidence in its overall context

      • Midrange photos: Shows the evidence closer in space

      • Close-up photo: Focuses on the DNA source (e.g., saliva on a straw or sweat on a hat).

  2. Evidence Collector:

    • Responsible for physically collecting the evidence using proper CSI techniques.

    • Must use tools such as tweezers, swabs, or sterile water to avoid contamination.

    • Places the sample in an evidence bag and labels it with:

      • Group number

      • Item description

      • Collection location

      • Time of collection

  3. Videographer:

    • Responsible for recording the evidence collection process.

    • Ensures the Evidence Collector follows proper procedures during collection.

    • Videos will be reviewed later to assess accuracy and technique.

  4. Optional Role (if 4 members): Documenter/Sketch Artist:

    • Creates one sketch showing the location of a high-priority item relative to surrounding objects (e.g., “Coffee cup on table near north exit”).

Instructions

  1. Preparation:

    • Gather your CSI tactical bags containing PPE, tweezers, sterile water, swabs, evidence bags, sketch paper, and professional-grade cameras.

    • Review the clues provided to your group. Each clue leads to a specific location and item.

  2. At Each Location:

    • Locate the Item: Use the clue to find the evidence item in the designated area.

    • Photograph:

      • Take overall photos showing the item in its context (e.g., on a desk or chair).

      • Take mid-range photos showing the item more closely.

      • Take a close-up photo of the DNA source (e.g., saliva on a straw or sweat on a hat).

      • Be sure to include evidence markers and scales in your photographs as appropriate.

    • Collect Evidence:

      • Use tweezers or swabs to collect samples carefully.

      • Place the sample in an evidence bag and label it with:

        • Group number

        • Name of evidence collector

        • Item description

        • Collection location

        • Time of collection

    • Document:

      • Write down observations about the item (e.g., potential DNA source, condition of the evidence).

      • For one item, create a simple sketch showing its location relative to surrounding objects.

  3. Rules:

    • Work as a team to solve each clue and complete tasks efficiently.

    • Avoid touching evidence directly—always use gloves and tools provided.

    • Respect other groups’ workspaces; do not interfere with their items or clues.

    • Once you’ve collected your first evidentiary item, take it to your instructor for review. Upon proper collection, you will get your next clue.

    • Return all collected evidence and documentation to the instructor at the end of the scavenger hunt.

  4. Time Limit:

    • You have 1 hour to complete all tasks. Plan your time wisely!

  5. Winning Criteria:

    • The group that successfully locates, photographs, collects, and documents all four items with proper technique wins.
